Peter Robinson was appointed as the First Minister for Northern Ireland on 05 June 2008.
He is the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party and was MP for East Belfast from 1979 until May 2010. He has also been an MLA for the constituency since 1998.
Mr Robinson served on Castlereagh Borough Council from 1977 to July 2007. During his period on the council he held the positions of Deputy Mayor (1978) and Mayor (1986), and was an Alderman from 1988. He was given the Freedom of the Borough in 2003.
He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly, established in 1982, where he served as chairman of the Environment Committee until the Assembly was dissolved in 1986. In 1996 Mr Robinson was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum, which existed until 1998.
He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1998, and in 1999 was appointed as Minister for the Department of Regional Development. He served in this role until July 2000, and again from October 2001 to October 2002. Mr Robinson also served as Minister for the Department of Finance & Personnel in the Northern Ireland Executive between May 2007 and June 2008.
He was appointed to the Privy Council in May 2007.
